    – Understanding CheckSystems and Banking Barriers

    • Marquita explains that CheckSystems functions like a credit report but for banking history. Closed accounts with unpaid fees block people from opening new accounts anywhere.

If you are in check systems because you have had an account at one point or another last year, 20 years, 30 years ago, and it was closed and you still owe fees, that is going to prohibit you from opening a bank account anywhere else.

    – Marquita Robertson

    – Why People Remain Unbanked

    • Beyond CheckSystems, barriers include cultural distrust of banks, lack of proper ID or proof of address, and the belief that they don't have enough money to need an account.
    • Distrust of financial institutions
    • No government-issued ID
    • No physical address for proof of residence
    • Perception of insufficient funds

    – FDIC Insurance vs. Alternative Payment Apps

    • Tiffany shares a recent bank glitch experience. Marquita clarifies that FDIC (banks) and NCUA (credit unions) protect consumers, while Cash App and similar services offer no recourse for errors or disputes.

If you don't have a bank account, if you have Cash App, if something like this happens, your money is gone. And there is no recourse.

    – Marquita Robertson

    – Evaluating Bank Account Features

    • Marquita walks through key features to compare: minimum opening deposits, monthly maintenance fees, overdraft policies, debit card access, and online banking. She stresses that the right account depends on individual needs and habits.

All bank accounts are not created equal. And just like a shoe, one size does not fit all.

    – Marquita Robertson

    – Tiffany's Personal Banking Journey

    • Tiffany recounts being hit with repeated $30 overdraft fees as a teenager and switching to a credit union that declines transactions instead. She emphasizes asking detailed questions before opening any account.

    – Documents Needed to Open an Account

    • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or student ID)
    • Proof of residence
    • Minimum opening deposit
    • Time to ask questions and understand terms

    – Bank On Certified Accounts Resource

    • Marquita directs listeners to thecollaborativenc.org and the Bank On North Carolina list of certified accounts designed specifically for people previously shut out of the banking system.
