Ericka Young is on a mission to help employees take control of their finances. In this episode, Tiffany interviews her to discuss her company's corporate financial wellness program and how it is helping employees learn about money management and make better financial decisions. About Our Guest During her 17 years in business, Ericka Young has served over 500 families as a certified financial coach.  Her specialty is helping people crush debt so that they can design a vibrant and intentional life. She believes that personal finance goes beyond the numbers and has developed creative ways to break down the mental and experience-based barriers to financial success.  In 2017, she wrote her 1st best-selling book, Naked and Unashamed: 10 Money Conversations Every Couple Must Have. Key Takeaways

    • 1

Financial wellness programs in the workplace reduce employee stress and improve productivity and retention.

Over 60% of employees come to work stressing about finances, affecting relationships, physical health, mental health, and productivity.

Companies offering financial wellness stand out as less than 20% currently provide such programs.

Retention improves when employees feel their whole selves are cared for, not just basic benefits.

    • 2

Traditional 401(k) education and annual benefits presentations are insufficient for true financial wellness.

Employees often have pressing issues like debt and budgeting that aren't addressed by retirement-focused sessions.

Tiffany's experience showed employees remained disengaged with 401(k) contributions despite provider visits.

Financial wellness requires deeper, ongoing support beyond one-off presentations.

    • 3

Outsourcing financial wellness to experts and using surveys creates measurable impact and engagement.

Pre- and post-event surveys help demonstrate ROI and employee sentiment changes.

Workshops, webinars, self-paced courses, and coaching can be tailored to company needs.

Creating a buzz through engaged employees spreads knowledge and enthusiasm organically.

    • 4

Financial wellness fosters community, loyalty, and a culture where money conversations are safer.

Employees feel supported and cheered on by coworkers and leadership.

Programs create camaraderie and shared journeys toward financial goals.

This environment encourages engagement and long-term commitment to the company.

    – Defining Financial Wellness in the Workplace

    • Financial wellness is part of broader corporate wellness initiatives. It goes beyond basic benefits to address financial stress through workshops and coaching.

Over 60% of employees come to work stressing about their finances in particular. And obviously that affects their relationships. It affects their physical health. It obviously affects their mental health.

    – Ericka Young

    – Impact on Productivity and Career Growth

    • Tiffany shares that financial stress hurts productivity and can slow career advancement. She plans to research how personal finance issues affect movement up the corporate ladder.

People with excessive personal finance issues outside of work, they're not able to move along the corporate ladder as quickly as people that don't.

    – Why Companies Should Invest in Financial Wellness

    • Ericka emphasizes retention benefits. Companies that care for employees' whole selves stand out, especially since less than 20% currently offer financial wellness programs.

If people know that you actually care about their whole self... People are looking for reasons to stay because their company actually cares about them.

    – Ericka Young

    – Why One-Off Benefits Presentations Aren't Enough

    • Annual 401(k) sessions and newsletters fail to address real-time financial struggles like debt and budgeting. Deeper, ongoing support is needed.

The 401k administrator was talking about how to grow your money for the retirement. And I'm like... Can someone talk to me about my student loans? Can you help me understand how to budget?

    – Ericka Young

    – Real-World Example: Lunch-and-Learn Success

    • Tiffany implemented financial wellness lunch-and-learns in HR, explaining HSA benefits. Engagement increased dramatically and knowledge spread company-wide.

Everybody was like, oh my gosh, I didn't even know this existed. I didn't even know that this is how you could possibly use this benefit.

    – What Financial Wellness Programs Can Look Like

    • Options include workshops, keynotes, webinars, self-paced courses, and coaching. Pre- and post-event surveys measure impact and guide future programming.
    • In-person or virtual workshops
    • Ongoing topic series (budgeting, debt, goal setting)
    • Self-paced online courses
    • One-on-one or group coaching
    • Integration with professional development events

    – Additional Implementation Ideas

    • Companies can enhance EAP offerings with dedicated financial coaching packages. This provides hands-on, personalized support beyond generic resources.

    – How to Connect with Ericka Young
