    Key Takeaways

    • 1

Skill sets and networking often outweigh formal credentials when pursuing career opportunities

Rebecca transitioned from music and arts administration into financial counseling through program management skills and a key connection at AFCPE

Tiffany emphasizes that "it's not what you know, it's who you know" and encourages applying even when job descriptions list requirements you don't fully meet

    • 2

The AFC (Accredited Financial Counselor) and CFP (Certified Financial Planner) serve different client needs along a financial continuum

AFC focuses on budgeting, debt management, spending plans, and the emotional/psychological aspects of money

CFP focuses on long-term wealth building, investments, insurance, and tax strategies

Many professionals hold both certifications to serve clients across their entire financial journey

    • 3

Follow your passion rather than the money—identify what makes your "heartbeat faster"

Rebecca found alignment between her values around equity/inclusion and AFCPE's mission to close racial and gender wealth gaps

Tiffany transitioned from HR to financial education because helping people get out of debt brought her joy

Both guests stress that career paths are rarely linear and twists/turns are normal

    • 4

It's okay—and often necessary—to ask for help with personal finances

Most people weren't taught money management in school and were taught to be quiet about money

Financial counselors provide judgment-free support and have often walked in clients' shoes

Consumers should verify credentials, continuing education requirements, and backing organizations before hiring professionals

    Intro

    • Tiffany Grant interviews Rebecca Wiggins, Executive Director of AFCPE, about becoming an Accredited Financial Counselor and navigating non-linear career paths in financial services.

    – Rebecca's Non-Linear Career Journey

    • Rebecca started with a music degree and French horn scholarship, then moved into arts administration and program management before landing at AFCPE through a networking connection.

If you would have told me when I started out in high school or college that this is what I would be doing, it didn't make sense at the time.

    – Rebecca Wiggins

    – The Power of Networking and Taking Opportunities

    • Tiffany and Rebecca discuss how relationship-building and saying yes to meetings helped both of them discover their paths. Rebecca notes women often count themselves out of opportunities too early.

Don't be afraid of the yeses... what if they say yes? What if they ask you to write another blog post?

    – Rebecca Wiggins

    – What is AFCPE and the AFC Certification?

    • AFCPE is a national nonprofit membership association that certifies financial counselors. The AFC designation focuses on comprehensive, culturally competent counseling for budgeting, debt, and the emotional aspects of money—meeting clients where they are without asset minimums.

    – AFC vs CFP: Understanding the Distinctions

    • Rebecca explains the difference between financial counselors (AFC) and financial planners/advisors (CFP). AFCs help with spending plans and debt; CFPs focus on investments and wealth building. Both require exams, experience hours, ethics training, and continuing education.

The AFC is really a foundational certification. Many people go on and get the CFP because it goes much more in depth in some of the topics like investing and insurance.

    – Rebecca Wiggins

    – Can You Hold Both AFC and CFP?

    • Yes—Rebecca confirms the certifications are complementary. Professionals can serve clients across their financial lifecycle or refer between AFCs and CFPs as client needs evolve.

    – Identifying Your Passion and Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

    • Both guests share how following passion over money led to fulfilling careers. They discuss imposter syndrome and the fear of success ("don't be afraid of the yeses").

Identify what makes your heartbeat faster.

    – Rebecca Wiggins (quoting mentor Sandra Davis)

    – It's Okay to Ask for Help

    • Rebecca emphasizes that most people weren't taught personal finance and there's no shame in seeking help. Financial counselors offer judgment-free support.

It's okay to ask for help... There's no shame involved in this. Most of us weren't taught these things.
